With transport contributing to 25% of carbon dioxide emissions and an increase of 17% predicted over the next 10 years encouraging sustainable transport methods are essential. Liftshare offers a unique leading product that is contributing to reducing emissions through services that aim to maximise efficient use of road space. They operate an on-line mapping and matching database that allows users to match empty seats in cars to people requiring lifts, which was recently extended to ‘Bikebudi’. The idea is not just to help experienced cyclists to find BikeBUDi’s but also to encourage individuals who may be concerned about cycling to give it a go. Liftshare has (162,000) registered users, (32%) of registered journeys result in a match and they estimate over (38 million) road miles are shared each year saving (11,768) tonnes of CO2. They provide their services to clients in hundreds of businesses, hospitals and universities and make their main database available free of charge to the public.
