Unilever plc, UK and Latin America
Project Medusa
Latin America suffers many problems in terms of water availability, due to a wide variety of environmental and human factors including climate change, desiccation due to deforestation, drought, and pollution and population growth. Unilever has many manufacturing operations in this region and in many of processes water is an essential utility or ingredient. In response, Unilever issued a challenge to its sites to reduce their water imprint by 1,000,000m³. Hence, Project Medusa was born – a joint initiative between Unilever’s corporate environmental Group and the 17 foods manufacturing sites across Latin America. The project was launched in 2003 with a training course and workshop in Brazil, involving delegates from each of the sites. The key aspect of the workshop was that of knowledge sharing and building on the principle of “If only Unilever knew, what Unilever knows”. The project is well on the way to delivering the target.
