Bovis Lend Lease
NoWaste

‘NoWaste’ is a unique sustainability learning programme.  It is aimed at construction industry site operatives to help them identify the root causes of waste and be part of the waste reduction initiative.  The major achievement has been to develop the tools and techniques used to communicate and raise awareness of staff, many of whom do not have English as their first language.  The tools include materials used for site induction, identifying why waste happens and what solutions there are to reduce waste.  A ‘train the trainer’ approach is used to train Supervisors who then cascade the information to their construction teams on site.  Feedback and ideas from operatives are gathered and if they are used on site there is a prize for the operative.  The project also makes reference to other best practice initiatives, for example standardised waste signage now being utilised across the industry to improve waste segregation."

Solway Recycling Ltd
Solway Bin & Liner System

With waste management legislation extending to the agricultural sector there has been a step-change in farmers' requirements to deal with their waste.  Solway Recycling, with their patented 'Bin and Liner' system offer a simple and extremely effective solution to the collecting and recycling of waste farm plastics.  The 'Bin and Liner' system is simple.  Its simplicity is also its strength.  It allows a farm to collect, segregate and compact wastes in an efficient manner.  Storage is safe and tagging ensures traceability and increased bio-security.  The system ensures that waste collection is efficient and flexible with only full liners being collected.  Farmers do not need to find storage solutions or have to purchase or hire expensive waste management equipment such as skips or compactors.  Instead, waste is collected as and when generated and uplifted when required.

Boots Group plc
A Journey Towards Sustainable Retail Products

The project involved the creation of a sustainable product development strategy at Boots and its integration into everyday business operations.  Corporate commitment was strongly in support of this project. Sustainable product development is a key strand of Boots CSR strategy. Embedding the principles of sustainable development (environmental, social and ethical) into a large and complex business was a considerable challenge.  The company has a complex supply chain embracing product development, manufacturing, distribution, and retailing covering over 30,000 product lines

Overcoming barriers both real and perceived using innovative tools and processes such as demonstration projects, and the introduction of risk and sustainability assessment models developed by Boots has raised awareness and enabled sustainable development to become a key business driver for new product introduction and innovation.  The strategy has been designed so that it has become part of "the way they do things" for everyone in the business involved in bringing their products to market.

As a result more sustainable products are now coming to Boots stores; Issues have been addressed and progress has been made at each stage of the “Product Journey” from concept to end of life, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainable product development. Examples include sustainable sourcing of  raw materials, packaging optimization and the introduction of recycled materials, energy management, and reducing impacts from distribution logistics. Recently work has been completed to develop new products with lower carbon footprints. These achievements have been carried out in partnership with suppliers, academic bodies, designers and stakeholders such as NGOs and trade bodies.

They offer ‘OPTIMISA’ ™ system to minimise the costs and environmental impacts of deliveries.  They also produce a Green Guide, now in its third edition, with recycling partner schemes and tips for customers on improvements.

Sheppard Robson
Integrating sustainability into the architectural design process and business operations

Sheppard Robson is an international practice providing architectural, urban design, town planning, master-planning and interior design services.  As one of the largest practices in the UK, with over 300 people and established offices in both London and Manchester, the practice is leading the industry in its implementation of sustainability into the design and construction of the built environment and the practice business processes.   Sheppard Robson's commitment to the environment is delivered by their design and business processes which have industry-wide and individual (staff) impact.  In 2001 they looked at the potential impact sustainability would have on the construction industry, and identified that they were able to influence a) the way in which buildings were constructed together with their clients and peers views on sustainability and b) how they operate their own buildings and treat their staff.  At that point they developed their environmental policy to show their commitment to these issues.  They have since developed a system to deliver completed projects which are leading examples of integrated sustainability.  Their process are implemented by their ISO 14001 accredited environmental management system (EMS) and monitored and supported by a group of experts within the practice.

Gregg's of Yorkshire

Reduction of waste to landfill

As a division of Gregg's plc with 136 bakery retail outlets, it is imperative that waste be recycled and diverted from landfill.  Huge quantities of materials are brought into the division and dispatched to the outlets daily.  They include cardboard, office/shop paper waste, polythene and plastic.   The project required members of staff from all areas of the business, sales, production, dispatch, transport and hygiene to work together to 'make it happen'.  A two-shop trial began in December 2005 with presentations being made to all Shop Managers/Assistant Shop Managers by
February 7th 2006.  Following the successful trial and staff presentations it was decided to roll out the trial to all of the other retail outlets in the Division.  By the end of June 2006, 127 retail outlets were rolled out. All the 136 shops are now 'back - hauling' materials in a 'food safe' way." It has been an excellent example of 'teamwork'. Other materials are now being returned.

BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions
Efficiency Improvement in Powder Coating

Traditionally all parts of a surface warship were coated with paints containing Volatile Organic Compounds.  A project was undertaken to identify areas where improvements could be made as application of wet paint is costly, time consuming and generates large quantities of waste and releases significant amounts of Volatile Organic Compounds to atmosphere.  Powder coating of ships parts and fixtures was seen as a major step forward in reducing these impacts both to the business and the environment.  All ships fixtures and small parts are now powder paint coated.  This has resulted in the elimination of Volatile Organic Compound emissions and special waste arising and has resulted in significant cost savings to the business and environment.
