Fairfield Materials Management - Sustainable in-situ composting

Fairfield has become Manchester's first in-situ compost producer. The business uses organic material generated by New Smithfield Market (wholesale fruit and vegetable market), this is composted through a Vertical Composting Unit. The technology enabled the system to be located at the market, reducing the environmental burden of transporting unprocessed material to another site. The system challenges individuals to re-evaluate their views on waste material and the environment. The system produces high quality compost that is used to improve soils throughout Greater Manchester.

Eli Lilly and Co - Reduction of zinc in waste streams

A significant development effort was expended to demonstrate that reduction in the amount of soluble zinc charged to the fermentation process would not compromise either yield or quality. This project achieved a 50% reduction in the amount of soluble zinc charged to the fermentation process without loss in yield or quality - there are some early indications that quality of the product might actually have been slightly enhances.

Rolls Royce Group plc - Achievement of long-term environmental improvement targets

Achieving long-term environmental improvement targets requires a sustained commitment to continual improvement processes at all levels of the company. In 1999, Rolls-Royce published its first public report on the environment, "Powering a better world". This report was the first of its kind by an international company in its sector. The report set out the company's major impacts and declared long-term goals for both its products and its operations. The operational targets were for a five-year horizon, which was complete at the end of 2003.

Rolls-Royce published the latest edition of "Powering a Better World" in May 2004 and this contains details of their success in meeting these targets and excellent progress towards the longer-term product targets. These product targets were the first ones to be publicly declared and have been extremely influential, particularly in the aviation industry.

The Nuaire Group - Energy and carbon saving ventilation system

The ventilation of UK buildings is mandatory. Ventilation is essential for healthy conditions within the building for the maintenance of its fabric. The ventilation of buildings uses huge amounts of energy. The challenge was to achieve energy savings whilst maintaining good air quality for occupants. This demanded the adoption and development of three new technologies and then combining and applying them across a very wide range of fan products. This was the single largest product development project undertaken by Nuaire, taking several years to complete.
