Bovis Lend Lease UK

Reducing the carbon footprint of construction through FSC project accreditation and recycled plastic board

Bovis Lend Lease

Bovis Lend Lease is an environmental leader in the construction sector, with strong environmental policies and a focus on ways to reduce the carbon footprint of construction projects in temporary and permanent works. Following on from the BCE Highly Commended project NoWaste last year, Bovis Lend Lease sustainability is focusing on BeOnsite - helping people into work; waste reduction; carbon emission reduction, material certification and design.

Every year, millions of sheets of plywood are used on construction sites for site hoarding, concrete formwork and protection.  Most of it is shredded and finds its way to landfill.  Bovis Lend Lease worked with Environmental Recycling Technologies plc to produce RePlas boards from recycled, mixed-waste plastic using the new Powder Impression Moulding process. The hoardings were successfully used for part of a new retail development in Cardiff.

One Wood Street was the first commercial project in the UK to achieve the new FSC Project Chain of Custody Certification Standard. The standard required Bovis Lend Lease to develop systems to ensure that all the permanent timber in the project was FSC certified. This covered all of the internal doors, linings and finishings. The project achieved certification to the standard in August 2007.

The Fish for Life programme is designed to help to secure the future of precious food fisheries.  It has developed over the past five years to become one of the most active and far-reaching seafood sustainability programmes of any European seafood processor.  Led by the Young's brand in the UK (but a project of the entire Foodvest Group), Fish for Life shapes the business's entire approach to sourcing, product development and marketing. As Europe's leading seafood buyer, Foodvest also uses its influence to drive positive improvement throughout its seafood supply chain - from boat owners and fishing companies, UK retailers and restaurants through to consumers.

McDonald's

Converting McDonald's delivery fleet to 100% biodiesel made with its own used cooking oil

The introduction of a 100% biodiesel fuel followed an extensive trial by McDonald's and its distribution partner, Keystone Distribution UK, which began in August 2006.  Now, the entire 45-vehicle fleet that operates from McDonald's Basingstoke distribution centre runs on 100% biodiesel made from its own used cooking oil.  McDonald's is also converting the rest of the 155-strong delivery fleet to run on the fuel.  The company estimates that the annual carbon saving of the move will be 1,675 tonnes when national rollout is completed - the equivalent of removing 2,424 family cars from the road each year.  All of the used cooking oil is traceable back to the restaurants it came from.

Green Building Store

Development of Ecoplus System windows and doors

Green Building Store’s Ecoplus System aims to systematically address issues of environmental impact in window manufacture, including CO2 emissions, resource use (sustainable timber) and health.  The Ecoplus System has been at the cutting edge of sustainable window design since its launch in 1995.  Firstly, it pioneered the use of safer, boron-based, timber preservatives in window manufacture in the UK. In 1995, Ecoplus was also at the forefront of the use of low-emissivity double or triple glazing - far in excess of the requirements of Building Regulations.  In 2005, Ecoplus was the first range of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) 100% certified timber windows and glazed doors to be manufactured in the UK.

Land Securities

Corporate environmental management

Originally instigated ten years ago, the Land Securities’ approach to sustainable development set new standards for the construction sector.  Following an environmental impact assessment, an in-house Environment Manager draws up a project-specific Environmental Compliance Register (ECR) that forms the basis of an on-going audit programme. Not only did a recent office development at One Wood Street, achieve a ‘Very Good’ BREAAM rating, but the occupier (Eversheds) went further, committing to install a ‘green’ roof and chilled beam cooling that will take the property up to an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating.  Eversheds will also supply Land Securities with the actual in-use energy data so that the design team can compare its design with how the building works in practice, which will help improve designs for future buildings.  This level of cooperation between developer, contractor and occupier sets new standards for the speculative development market.

Solutia

Formose

The objective of this project was a 99% reduction of formaldehyde (HCHO) in a chemical site effluent. By implementing this project, Solutia has demonstrated that a new technology – the continuous formose process - is suitable for industrial wastewater treatment. The innovative portion of this project lies with the combination of the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) followed by a plug flow type reactor (PFTR).  A waste heat recovery unit ensures that the energy required to run (2 bar (g) steam) the plant is minimised.
