DIAGEO Shieldhall
Reduce, re-use, recycle

Sir Anthony Cleaver presenting the BCE Management for Resource Efficiency Premier Award to Alex Currie, Diageo.
Diageo is the world’s leading premium drinks businesses with a collection of international brands across spirits, wine and beer, which include Johnnie Walker, Captain Morgan and Guinness. In 2009, the company’s turnover was nearly £8.7 billion.
The Shieldhall site near Glasgow is part of Diageo Global Supply and packages the company’s high-volume Scotch Whisky brands. The site has eight high-speed lines, the fastest runs at 600 bottles per minute.
The company is committed to reducing its environmental impact at the site and has implemented measures to address the following key initiatives:
Reducing water use – introducing water-saving measures (including smart meters) reduced water use by 4% in 2008 and 16% in 2009.
Employee engagement by involving local environmental champions to support initiatives across the site, such as the company-wide Green iQ competition.
Zero waste to landfill – waste to landfill was reduced by 38% between 2006 and 2008. The recycling rate is now 95% and the company is liaising with its waste contractors to deliver 100% recycling by 2011.
Cutting energy use – a 27% reduction in energy use has been achieved through a range of measures including heavy fuel oil boiler decentralisation to local gas central heating.
collaborating with suppliers has resulted in a costReducing costs through resource efficiency – reducing spirit processing losses by improving processes and saving of about £200,000.
