Pfizer UK Green Chemistry Programme

Richard Lambert presenting the BCE Management Premier Award to Lorraine Murtagh, Pfizer Group UK Ltd

Pfizer is a leading global, research-based, pharmaceutical company. At its site in Sandwich, Kent, the company employs over 2,000 scientists and invests over £550 million on research and development.
The company introduced ‘green chemistry’ to eliminate or reduce the use of hazardous materials and improve resource efficiency in the development and manufacturing processes.

The Pfizer Green Chemistry Programme established a management system for the integration of the principles of green chemistry into key stages of the processes of discovery, development and manufacture of new pharmaceuticals.  The key aspects of the system are:

Development of a range of green chemistry tools for the selection of reagents, solvents and chemical synthesis routes.

Identification of challenging solvent reduction goals.

Implementation of green chemistry metrics to evaluate the environmental efficiency of all synthesis routes in pharmaceutical development.

   Performance tracking and reporting.

Effective training and communications programmes changing the culture of the organisation.

   A successful internal awards programme.

The success of the Green Chemistry Programme, now in its fourth year, can be measured by significant reductions in the use of solvents, the ownership of the Programme by staff and downstream improvements to pharmaceutical processes in development and production.
