Sustainable Environmental Strategy for Diesel Engine Production
The project is for the revolutionary environmental strategy associated with the introduction of the new high volume 1.4/1.6L diesel engine into Dagenham Engine Plant. The project introduces an additional 575,000 unit engine machining and assembly facility to Dagenham, supplementing the existing 750,000 unit facility. With strong corporate commitment the environmental strategy was introduced to compete with other Ford plants and retain UK production.
New environmental innovations include: Renewable resource metalworking fluid and lubricant strategy (to use one common fluid between all processes), innovative fluid recycling strategy and hazardous waste strategy including sludge reclamation. These initiatives resulted in annual savings of 150,000 litres oil, reduction of 300,000 litres of oily sludge and £400k savings in effluent costs. In addition a metals management strategy was introduced which has resulted in recycling steel swarf worth £414k and recycling aluminium worth £1.4 million; The energy strategy includes a new high efficiency heating system; high efficiency coolant, extraction and chiller plant system design; and the engine assembly plant being fully powered by two 3MW wind turbines. This has resulted in savings of 5 million kWh electricity and up to 40 million kWh of gas.
