Saint Gobain Glass UK Ltd, Eggborough Flat Glass Cullet Recycle
Although recycling of container glass is common place, flat glass is generally considered to be too contaminated and too expensive to recycle. St Gobain were determined to change this perception. To do this, they had to overcome the contamination and transport issues. This meant ensuring that customers kept damaged flat glass clean and developing a system to transport the broken glass back St Gobain on their delivery vehicles. After months of development, they produced "The Big Bag" which could be loaded with over 1 tonne of broken glass cullet and then fitted into St Gobain’s flat glass delivery vehicles for return journeys. They then trained customers how to use the bags and on what constituted contaminants.
