Dr Martin G Bigg - Environment Agency

Martin is Professor of Environmental Technology Innovation at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol. He is also Director of the Environmental Technologies Innovation Network which is a joint programme between the University of Bristol, the University of Exeter, UWE, City of Bristol and Regen South West, to encourage and support environmental innovation by business.

Martin started his career in the chemical industry and was previously Head of Industry and Waste Regulation at the Environment Agency, where he was responsible for the development of policies and strategies for the regulation of the manufacturing, power and waste management sectors. He developed the pollution inventory and pioneered the use of environmental management systems and risk based regulation to secure environmental outcomes.

Eddie Bingham - InterfaceFLOR

Eddie Bingham is the Engineering Director of InterfaceFLOR in Europe, a division of US-based Interface Inc, a global leader in the manufacture of environmentally responsible modular floor coverings. With a career at InterfaceFLOR spanning nearly 30 years, Eddie has been involved with the company's environmental journey from the start in 1994, a journey now known as Mission Zero. Eddie holds a BEng honours degree in Engineering and his areas of specialisation are energy, conservation and renewable technologies.

Alistair Bird - Metoc plc

Alistair is a Director of Intertek- Metoc, an environmental, site investigation and marine installation management services business. Working where ‘engineering meets the environment’, Intertek-Metoc provides support to project developers and regulators in the energy, offshore renewables and water sectors. Alistair is a Chartered Engineer, has 30 years of experience and consults on the impact that environmental considerations have on planning and delivery of major projects.

Richard Burns - Veolia Water UK plc

A chemist by training, an environmental manger by persuasion, Richard studied chemistry at UMIST before becoming a Senior Pollution Officer with Yorkshire Water Authority.  He pursued his career in environment, safety and sustainability with global printing, pharmaceutical and gas companies before joining the world’s leading water company, Veolia Water in 2001.

Richard Busby - E.ON UK plc

As the Environment Manager for E.ON’s generation activities in the UK, Richard is responsible for the environmental performance of 25 fossil fuel and 15 renewable energy sites across the country. He is currently leading cross-industry work to encourage the re-use of ash from coalfired power stations.

Geoff Dollard - The AEA Group

Geoff is AEA’s Practice Leader for air and environmental quality. He has over 30 years of experience in research programmes on the environmental impacts of pollutants.  Prior to joining AEA, Geoff had a university research career in the UK and Norway carrying out specialist work relating to acidification. On joining AEA, he developed work on broader studies of atmospheric pollution, directing several international collaborative projects. Geoff has been a member of several national expert groups and led the development of AEA’s air quality business.

Cathy Durston - Met Office

Cathy heads up the Met Office's commercial team which provides a range of weather and climate services to commercial customers in the UK and internationally.  Cathy's background is in energy, environmental and climate change consultancy having previously worked for AEA for 17 years.  She graduated from Southampton University with a Chemistry degree and has also attained the Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing.

Martin Gibson - Speedy plc

Martin has worked on environmental issues for over 20 years. He is Head of Environmental Assurance at Speedy plc. He leads Speedy’s advisory services on environmental issues, focusing on helping businesses understand their sustainability performance and how reducing their impact on the environment can benefit commercial performance. His previous roles include directing a company that focuses on the built environment and directing programmes that helped businesses to reduce costs through improved environmental performance.

Marcus Gover - WRAP

Marcu Gover

As one of WRAP’s directors, he is responsible for leading WRAP’s work aimed at helping the UK move towards a closed loop economy where the reuse, recycling and recovery of waste is maximised and the volume of material sent to landfill is minimised. He has worked in the environment sector for over 20 years, in the UK and abroad. During this time, he has held a wide range of roles including managing a water engineering company, running an outsourced waste management operation and setting up an office in China. He is also a Trustee of the Business Commitment to the Environment Awards.

Iain Gulland - WRAP

Iain Gulland

Iain is Director of Zero Waste Scotland, the programme formed to support delivery of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan.  He is also a member of WRAP’s Executive Committee and is chairing work on creating a single energy and resource efficiency service for Scottish businesses.  Iain has 15 years of experience working in various roles in recycling and waste management.

Helen Hall - Renewable Energy Systems Ltd

Helen works for one of the world's leading wind farm developers as a Project Manager of onshore wind farms and also as its Group Environmental Manager.  Her role ensures that environmental considerations and protection are foremost in the design of RES wind farms - from selecting sites through to construction and day-to-day operation.

Barry Smith

Barry Smith

Barry is a Chartered Structural Engineer who, after 20 years in consultancy, moved into the contracting side of the Construction industry, firstly as Engineering and Environmental Manager with Bovis Construction, followed by 12 years as Environmental Manager with the Simons Group. In 2011, Barry set up his own consultancy, bps eco ltd, offering services in the fields of environmental management, engineering and innovation.

Barry is a founder member of the IStructE Sustainable Construction Panel, and out of a keen interest in local food, publishes a quarterly guide to local food producers in his home area, the National Forest in the East Midlands.

Tim Pinder - EA Ltd

Tim runs his own environmental company having held a number of senior environmental management positions including Environment Director at the UK’s largest waste management company and Head of Environment at the UK’s largest building materials company. He is a Fellow of IEMA, a Chartered Environmental Scientist and is also a lead EMS assessor with UKAS.

Dr Neil Varey

Neil, with a background in geology, physics and engineering, runs his own consultancy business and has extensive experience spanning operational, development and project management gained in the Service Industry, Environmental Consultancy and Higher Education. His has worked for leading major waste management and mineral companies and was previously Operations Director for the Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College.

Neil has diverse interests and experience in regional and country waste strategic plans, recycling initiatives and international infrastructure development.


The panel of assessors consists of independent judges who bring expertise from a wide range of businesses. Following an initial compliance filter, they judge the entries at various stages, carry out site visits and interview key and general company personnel, enabling them to assess entries against common, stringent criteria. It is a process that distinguishes and sets the BCE Environmental Leadership Awards apart from other award schemes.
